剣道での挨拶

南先生、お父さん、お母さん、そして団員の皆様、 南先生に今日ここにお招き頂きましたことを大変光栄に思っています。そして、皆様の稽古を拝見できたことを大変うれしく思っています。

私は、皆様が熱心に、そして元気に稽古に取り組んでいる姿に大変強い感動を受けました。

皆様は、稽古を通して、忍耐の美しさ、心と品格そして精神面での成長を学んでいます。さらにまた、皆様は団員の仲間の助けをかりて、とても大切なことを学んでいます。
一緒に稽古を積むことによって、ひとりの人間として、そして、お互いが別々の異なる人間としてではなく、一緒になって修行の道を歩んでいます。

この道を通じて、あなた達のお互いが勝者となるものであり、そして良い友情を育むものなのです。この道はまた、あなた達が人間としての強い面と弱い面の両方を育てるのです。
どうぞ、あなた達の生涯を通じて、稽古を続け、剣道を愛し、そして、武士道の道に向かって進み続け、そして、生涯の友情を育み、さらに、強い心を創り上げて行ってください。
そうした行いの中でも、あなた達の両親や先生方を大切にしてください。

本日あなた達を拝見できたことを大変嬉しく思っています。そして、それは、私の想像以上のもので言葉に言い尽くせないほどです。
それ故に、私にとって新しい何かが、あなた達 の文化に対して目を見開らかせてくれました。私はそのことを深く享受することが出来ました。 ありがとうございます、そして、通訳をしてくれた美幸さんに特に感謝を申し上げます。

Professor Minami, Parents and Kendo Students.
I am honored to be here as a guest of Professor Minami and to have had the pleasure of watching you practice.

I was very impressed with your enthusiasm and energy. You are learning, in your practice, the art of patience, development of mind and character and of the human spirit.

You are also learning a very important lesson in how to help your friends. By working together, you come to the journey together as one and not as a separate entity. In this way, both of you are winners and at peace.

In this way you also develop both the strong and the weak as one.
Please, throughout your lives, continue to practice and love Kendo and to go forward in the “Bushido” way and you will form lifelong friendships and build strength of character.

You honor your parents and your teacher in this action. It was a great pleasure to watch you and it was more than I expected.
Therefore, something new for me and an eye opener to your culture. I really enjoyed it. Thank you and a special　“Thank You” to Miyuki for her translation. （March 23, 2009）
